How to Maintain Your Vacuum Cleaner

We all rely on our vacuum cleaner to tackle dust in our homes. But, if dirt builds up in the machine, it can lose suction power, making it less efficient. By carrying out a few simple checks, you can extend your vacuum’s lifespan and save some money.

1. Clean the Vacuum’s Filters

Dust and debris can build up quickly on your vacuum’s filter, reducing its suction power. That’s why it’s important for you to clean it out every month.

Before you start cleaning, you must unplug your vacuum. Then, check your instruction manual to see whether you can wash the filter.

• If the filter is washable, run it under lukewarm water and allow to dry completely before use.
• If the filter isn’t washable, tap it against a hard surface to dislodge any clumps of dust. This may create a cloud of dust, so make sure you do it outside.

2. Remove Any Vacuum Blockages

Tube and/or hose blockages in your vacuum cleaner are another cause of poor suction. Fortunately, it’s easy to clear them with items you can find around the home:

• Unscrew the hose attachment from your vacuum cleaner.
• Remove any blockages by pushing a broom handle or a clothes hanger down the hose. Or, soak the tube in warm, soapy water to loosen the dust.

3. Remove Build-Up from the Vacuum Roller

Build-up on the vacuum’s brush roll can prevent spinning – meaning it won’t work as effectively. Some vacuums come with easy to remove rollers; if yours does, skip straight to step three below. If not, follow these simple steps to resolve this common issue:

1. Flip the roller head upside down to get a clear view.
2. Open the floor head by removing the bottom plate. This is often held in place with clips or screws.
3. Carefully remove the brush roll, following your manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Remove any hairs and threads attached to the roll by hand, or with an instrument like scissors. Be careful not to cut any of the bristles.
5. Unscrew the end caps of the brush roll and check the bearings for any build-up. You should also lubricate them for best results.
6. Check the vacuum belt, which can be found over the brush roll. Place a finger on the belt to check it’s still taut, or if there are any cracks and visible wear. You should replace the belt every six to twelve months, depending on how often you use the cleaner.

4. Empty Your Vacuum Cleaner Regularly

Bagged vacuum cleaners need to be changed regularly, and should never be more than two thirds full. Otherwise, the motor can overheat, odours can start to form, and debris can escape. It’s better to change them outside if possible, but if you must empty inside, then make use of a large bin bag.

If your vacuum is bagless, you’ll need to empty it out frequently. Most brands recommend emptying the bin before every use. It’s also a good idea to rinse it out with warm water once a month – but make sure it’s dry before you start cleaning.

Tips for Maintaining Your Vacuum Cleaner

Take care of your machine, and it will take care of your home – follow these extra steps to keep it in top condition:

• Keep it clean: Wipe down the outside of your vacuum with anti-bacterial wipes to keep it clean.
• Attach the bag properly: If your vacuum cleaner is bagged, make sure the bag is attached properly, otherwise debris can escape and damage the cleaner. Make sure you buy the correct bags for your model.
• Be careful with the cord: If the cord is tangled or obstructed, don’t use the automatic rewind button. Also, avoid getting it caught on furniture or running the vacuum over it.
• Avoid straining the cord: If the plug is pulled from the wall, this could cause an electric arc and damage the prongs.
• Store carefully: When storing, ensure there are no bends in the hose. Keep in a place with a mild temperature and somewhere it can’t get water damaged.
• Avoid overheating: If your appliance cuts out abruptly, it may have overheated. Switch it off for at least half an hour before use, and check the bag or bin.
• Be careful outdoors: Don’t use your vacuum outdoors or to suck up liquids, unless it’s designed for these functions. Also, pick up any large debris by hand to avoid clogging the machine.
